Glycolic acid compared with other ingredients

Most "which is better" questions turn out to be "which job do you need done". Glycolic acid exfoliates the surface; the ingredients below either exfoliate differently or do something else entirely. The comparisons set out what each does, what the sources say about combining them, and where the evidence is silent.

On combining, the sources lean towards spacing things out. DermNet NZ says leave-on AHA preparations can be alternated with retinoid creams and vitamin C (DermNet NZ), and Cleveland Clinic's retinol page suggests alternating days, or glycolic acid in the morning and retinol at night (Cleveland Clinic).

If you are starting a retinoid

The American Academy of Dermatology says a retinoid is a good option for someone with mild acne, mild pigmentation irregularities or mild fine lines, and advises starting with the least intense formulation every other night (AAD). The layering guide covers how to fit both into one week.
